DevLog #6 Art update (3D Models!)

We’re back again with another DevLog! This time we will go over the art implementation in our game including 2D sprites and 3D models.

STIM uses a combination of pixel art sprites with 3D voxel art in a VR setting. We feel that this unique combination of retro feeling pixel art with modern VR game design will allow us to deliver a unique experience for the players.

2D sprites

The sprites in our game have no black outlines with a heavier focus on shading. We have decided to go with this style to make the world feel more organic and make the plants look like a natural part of the world we are creating. The objects in the game world that can be interacted with have flat 2D sprites and, when they are gathered or picked up, they will change into a 3D model to portray that they can be combined with other 3D ingredients.

From 2D to 3D

To convert our 2D sprites into voxel models we are using an amazing tool called KennyShape (https://kenney.itch.io/kenney-shape) which allows to add depth to flat pixel art sprites while preserving their general design. Due to KennyShape’s size limitations, we are using other tools for more complex models.

Samples

Here are some samples and in game screenshots of our models, we hope you like them!

And that sums up this DevLog, thank you all for reading, and we'll see you next time! - StimTraders
