DevLog #3 Sounds of the galaxy!

Welcome to our audio DevLog!

Today we will be talking about sound related stuff in our game. “In space no one can hear you scream”, well maybe, but in STIM all of the native inhabitants of the planets you visit will hear you shoot, chop, stomp, pick up and combine resources. Or even listen to a podcast with you.

Audio is one of the most challenging aspects of the game for us as all of our team members have very little prior experience with creating sounds but we won’t let that stop us. To make STIM feel immersive and for it to sound just the way we intended, we have decided to record most of the sounds ourselves, relying on royalty free audio resources only for sounds we are not able to create. So, all of the footsteps you will hear while traversing newly discovered planets, the harsh sound of pulling alien plants with their roots out of the ground, all splashes, squishes, zaps, and claps will be recorded and edited by Hubert and Vulcan as they are going to traverse the most bizarre and outlandish corners of our city with a microphone in hand. We aim to keep the sounds familiar enough so that they feel natural but, at the same time, give them a cartoony, “juicy” feel to accompany the comic book style of our game.

Hopefully, you are also curious about the podcast mentioned above. As we all know, planets in space do not have their own soundtracks casually playing from their cores so to spice up your adventure a bit, the player will be able to carry around a radio with different stations that include all kinds of music and even a podcast to keep you updated on the latest news back from home Earth. The podcast will be recorded by our team members and will include few episodes on different topics. In the end though, it will be up to the player to decide whether he wants music to accompany his travels or to leave the radio on their spaceship and embrace the calm and quiet nature of newly discovered planets.

We hope this DevLog gives you an idea of what to expect in regard to audio in our game. We will be back with another DevLog next week so stay tuned for that!
